Join us! FM Academy Webinar: 360Works MirrorSync 2 – the perfect mobile development solution

Join us Tuesday, July 15th, for a free one-hour webinar at 2pm (EST)/ 1pm (CST)/ 11am (PST). This session is for any FileMaker Pro developer and/or “power user” who wants to satisfy the need for fast database access while out of the office. Register now.

MirrorSync is the best way to use your FileMaker database on an iPad, iPhone, or laptop without a network connection. Work on an offline mobile database at the fastest possible speed, and sync your changes with FileMaker Server when you have working network access. MirrorSync is completely free for syncing one device.

This webinar will be presented by Jesse Barnum, president of 360Works in Atlanta, Georgia. Jesse is the author of MirrorSync, and won FileMaker Excellence awards for both Outstanding Contribution to the FileMaker Community, as well Solution of the Year (2013) for MirrorSync.

In this webinar, you will learn how to:

  • Set up a two-way sync between a database hosted on FileMaker Server and a lightweight FileMaker Go database.
  • Customize scripts to only sync the records that mobile users need to access.
  • Easily deploy to users in the field with iPads or laptops

Slate Mentions Open Book Management

Slate recently published a brief intro to the concept of Open Book Management. We have been practicing Open Book Management at Skeleton Key and our sister company, Brightsource IT, since 2009. Running “open book” has been a major factor in our success and it has become a huge part of our culture. We’re fortunate to have a company made up of smart, passionate people. Open Book Management allows our business to leverage that intelligence and turn our staff’s passion into entrepreneurial spirit. As Ted Swanson, President of IT Solutions and a practitioner of open book management, once said, “I wouldn’t run a business any other way.”

You are invited to join our local FileMaker User Group. This group is for experienced FileMaker Devs, FileMaker users who’ve poked around under the hood and want to dive into development, and anyone else who wants to learn more about FileMaker. We aim to cover general FileMaker development, advanced techniques, plugin integration, external data access, external tool integration, etc. It’s really easy to build a crappy FileMaker app; but, with a bit of know-how, it’s just as easy to build a killer one. FileMaker STL will help you get there.

Join us on Tuesday, May 27 at 6pm as we relaunch a regular gathering for FileMaker developers in St. Louis. We’ll kick off the meeting with some pizza and drinks and an opportunity to get to know other FileMaker developers in our area.

Getting Started With FileMaker 13 Themes

This is part one of a two part series on using themes in FileMaker 13.

Themes were first introduced with FileMaker 12 and provided developers with a selection of preset themes that could be used to speed up layout design. The addition of themes was an improvement over the previously available options but was still rather limiting. With FileMaker 13, new tools have been introduced to help leverage the power of themes.

The Dark Age

Before FileMaker 12, styling took a conscious effort to provide layouts with a design that helped it stand out from the typical FileMaker solution. Designing an aesthetically pleasing layout was tedious. With FileMaker 12 the addition of themes was a breath of fresh air. Solutions created in FileMaker could now quickly take on a new appearance with just a few clicks.

Using barcodes with FileMaker Go

FileMaker Go 13′s new built-in barcode scanning feature makes it easier than ever to incorporate barcodes into your users’ workflows. Barcodes are a fantastic way to make data entry and retrieval both faster and more accurate. In this article, we’ll take a look at some details of various barcode formats and provide an overview of various ways to generate barcodes from within FileMaker.

Exploring the new Perform Script on Server script step

FileMaker 13′s new Perform Script on Server script step provides new opportunities for optimizing performance and it enables access to features that were previously unavailable to remote FileMaker Go clients. Our FMRPC product and other techniques have allowed this type of functionality with FileMaker 12, but having this capability built into the FileMaker 13 platform means we can leverage it much more broadly. Performing a script remotely allows us to build solutions that:

  • Dramatically improve remote performance for data-intensive tasks
  • Access plug-in features and complex web services from FileMaker Go
  • Perform scripts asynchronously
  • Seamlessly leverage FileMaker’s security model
